Cannon Hall Park and Gardens are buzzing about their latest award
Cannon Hall Park and Gardens are first time winners of the ‘Bees’ Needs Champions Awards for their work in creating a welcoming habitat for bees and insects.
The awards are run by Defra in partnership with the Green Flag Awards, the Bee Farmers’ Association, Championing the Farmed Environment and the Nature Friendly Farming Network. The awards recognise and celebrate examples of exemplary initiatives undertaken by local authorities, community groups, farmers and businesses to support pollinators. 32 winners have been chosen for the parks and greenspaces category across England, of which Cannon Hall Parklands are one.
Major work has taken place across the parklands including planting of a beautiful wildflower meadow, which can be seen from the South Front of the Hall. As well as looking stunning the flowers will encourage eco systems to develop and attract new wildlife to the parklands.
Cllr Tim Cheetham, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place (Regeneration and Culture) said:
Cannon Hall Parklands is an important space for visitors but also to the vast array of wildlife who live there. It has been vital to people, particularly over the last seven months to be able to appreciate and experience the nature found there as a way to relax and unwind. We are delighted that the new additions to the parkland, such as the wildflower meadow will encourage even more habitats and we are proud to be recognised in this way.
